Vintages of the County, Wine Art
Much of my art happens serendipitously. It is in the sharing of dreams that something magical happens. One day, I felt this very spark on my visit to Hubbs Creek Vineyard. It was springtime, and the vines were blooming in all their greenery. A light mist veiled the County landscape and droplets of rain sparkled everywhere. It was too early to be outside in my garden and yet here in the surrounding area of Wellington, all was flowering. The sun was invisible, just waiting and ready to begin a new season. The winery was warm and cheerful with friendship inside. It was a place full of questions and curiosity… so much to share. All the elements were here, that inspire a perfect painting.
All my life I have grown up with orchards, vineyards and wineries. From my Okanagan origins come an appreciation for agriculture, local produce and wines. Community spirit is a part of me and I take it with me, everywhere that I go. A love for the land is like a seed planted. Watered regularly it will grow and flourish often. These are my defining moments and perhaps they are ones that you might relate to. I often reminisce about a wine course offered at The Tuscan Wine School in Siena, Italy. The course was called “Tuscan Classics.” When I signed up for this, it was taught by the wine-master of Cesani Wines. She taught our class so much and included the values of passion, family, and tradition. It was a lot of fun and ever since this experience, I search deep inside myself for these values whenever or wherever in my travels I am creating.
Each of these amazing experiences of connecting to the land came together on my visit to Hubbs Creek. As the clouds rolled away revealing a big rainbow sky my mind began creating a painting. For me, this was a complete visualization where I envisioned the whole process in an instant. In time, I introduced this newly begun painting at the Bay of Quinte Art and Wine Festival in Belleville. It was an honour to show my artwork with artists from Prince Edward County. I was invited to do a painting demonstration and on that afternoon I painted Pinot Noir from the vineyard of Hubbs Creek. Two years after this, I licensed this art with a company called VIDA and scarves were produced. So it was that a family, a vineyard and a rainbow sky inspired all this… and a new collection of paintings titled Vintages of the County.
