Spray River in Banff National Park, Alberta
A successful work of art is something that awakens the senses. In this painting “Deeper Wisdom” I can almost hear the echoes surface from the heart of this forest. I am really pleased with the flow of this piece, right down to the original layer of Payne’s Gray. It is this initial underpainting that whispers with a deep blue shade of indigo – nature’s denim. No matter how I feel about this painting, there is a big grin on my face. I can’t help but think that some paintings just paint themselves!
The tall tree trunks and whispering branches here are so intriguing. Patterns are created from the rhythms of positive and negative space. I’m finding beautiful tensions in this composition as my brushes weave both light and shadow. This kind of forest light is really special to work with. The stage is set with just beautiful light filtering down through the trees. Earth tones and rare violet hues blend on my woodland palette.
Painting in natural light is so important, especially when navigating landscapes. On rainy days the light seems to be best in the afternoon. Today will be one of those days. I simply love the robin’s egg blue in this palette. There is a dreamy quality to these free-floating colours. Working the paint with just the right viscosity, lightness and freedom. Fresh from the easel!
The complexities of this piece are numerous, deep in this forest of “Deeper Wisdom”. Everything in this painting is a network, connecting and talking to one another. A nice colour harmony. To be an artist is a privilege and it has been wonderful to stand in these spaces collectively with nature. Every painting is a sentimental journey for me.
Sentimental Journeys is a collection of alpine landscapes painted with acrylics on to gallery wrapped canvas. Paintings are 24×24″ and 36×36″ with a depth of 1.5″ and a granite gray painted edge, ready for hanging. These paintings explore trails, both nostalgic and new. Their locations will forever be sentimental and special. This landscape series by Canadian artist and designer Tina Monod is about the beauty close and far, near and within Banff National Park and surrounding areas.
