Silver Star Mountain – Vernon, British Columbia

Timeless and beautiful, summer or winter. For those who love getting away for a little skiing, this is a familiar view. It is one that marks the end of summer, the anticipation of winter and the coming ski season. Many trips have been made down this mountain when the sun is setting and low on the horizon. The view is always a painting in motion on this well travelled road.

Light from the night sky traces the desert hills and Okanagan sage. In this painting the soft violets, cobalts and ochres of distant Lavington hills harmonize. Nearer, one can feel the dryness of the ranch land and the coolness of the evening air. Whistling cottonwood trees are changing colour and their gold colours glow like fireflies.

Descending into the forest valley, autumn leaves are turning all colours and creating their living tapestries of transformation. A familiar warm red from the Canadian maples is woven into the blue green spruce and pines.

Silver Star is a place that will always sing me home. With every season and journey it is a pleasant drive for those who love the pace of country roads and the charm of western ranches.

Cascade Amphitheatre – Banff National Park, Alberta

Sometimes all you need is a little elevation to get away from it all. Hikes like this one unfold with many layers of beauty. There is no greater feeling than a mountain high, which comes from pushing onwards, climbing higher and trusting in the trail ahead of you.

Hiking up from the Mount Norquay ski area and crossing the bridge at Forty Mile Creek takes one into a magically forested area of tall spruce and narrow lodgepole pines. The reward after zigzagging many switchbacks is to enter a totally natural, unique glacier-made amphitheatre. The limestone cliffs and geology are pretty dated and from them one gets a sense of the glaciers long ago.

There is something calming in the way that the mountain encloses and shelters all. Such a lovely alpine view of the sky and stars in this quiet part of the Canadian Rockies. This is a painting of tranquility, found in a glacial amphitheatre.
